RV PARK - The Many Uses of Dawn Dish Soap - Decatur TX Texas

 

We all know that Dawn dish soap is the best for washing dishes. I know I’ve tried many different kinds of dish soap over the years, and Dawn truly is the best. (This isn’t a sponsored post, it’s just my honest opinion.)

But what if I told you this soap is also ideal for a variety of jobs around your RV? That’s right, the next time something in your RV needs cleaning or fixing, you might find that that handy blue liquid sitting by your sink is exactly what you need!

Here are 10 of the best uses for Dawn dish soap in your RV.

Wash the Windows

Washing the RV windows—nobody enjoys it, but it’s one of those things that really does have to get done, especially if you spend time on the beach or in a dusty location. The good news? Dawn can help make the job a cinch!

To make an amazing window cleaning solution using dish soap, simply add ⅛ teaspoon of Dawn and ¼ cup of vinegar to a gallon of warm water. Mix well, pour into a spray bottle, and voilà, you have an excellent window cleaning solution that’ll work no matter what grime has made itself at home on your RV windows.

Note: This cleaner also works well for stainless steel appliances!

Cut Through Grease

Cutting through grease is Dawn’s whole thing, right? Well, that grease-fighting power isn’t limited only to dishwashing. You can also use Dawn to cut through the grease that has built up behind your stove, on your oven, and on your kitchen cabinet doors. 

Simply add a few drops of Dawn to a damp sponge and rub until sudsy. Use the sudsy sponge to wipe the grease away, making sure to rinse with a clean damp sponge and dry with a soft towel when the job is done. 

Remove Carpet Stains

Camping is dirty business. I know that when we’re parked out in the middle of nowhere, dirt, sand, mud, and all kinds of other messes end up tracked into our home-on-wheels. Unfortunately our current rig also has carpet, which has a tendency to catch this debris, often leading to carpet stains. 

The good news? Dawn can help with this, too!

To remove carpet stains with Dawn, mix equal parts Dawn and warm water in a spray bottle and spray the solution onto the stain. Allow to sit for a few minutes, then use a microfiber cloth to gently clean the stain. Use a damp cloth to rinse the soap away and then blot the area with a dry towel. 

Clean the Bathroom

Nobody wants a dirty RV bathroom, but I don’t especially like putting harsh chemicals into my RV’s holding tanks. What if they cause some sort of damage? Instead of risking it, I like to create a bathroom cleaning solution using Dawn.

To make your own bathroom cleaning spray, fill a spray bottle halfway to the top with white vinegar and heat the vinegar in the microwave until warm (obviously, don’t put the sprayer head in the microwave when you do this, just the bottle itself). Fill the other half of the bottle with Dawn, put the lid on the bottle, and shake vigorously. 

Spray the mixture on the shower walls, in your tub, and on the toilet. Let sit for ten minutes or so, then rinse the soap away for a shiny clean bathroom. 

Get Rid of Fruit Flies

Dealing with pests is never fun. Unfortunately, they seem to really like RVs. We’ve dealt with all kinds of bugs in our rig over the years, including those annoying little fruit flies that will sometimes go after your ripe produce. 

The best way to get rid of fruit flies? You guessed it: Dawn dish soap. In this instance, you will want to pour white vinegar into a bowl and add a small drop of dawn. The fruit flies will be drawn to the vinegar, but then can’t escape the bowl because the dish soap makes things so slippery. Genius!

Kill Ants

Another pest we’ve had to get rid of in our RV? Ants. These little pests have actually found their way into our rig several times.

There are lots of ways to get rid of ants, and ant poison is my favorite method. That said, Dawn can help keep them out as well. Simply put a couple of drops of the soap into a spray bottle of water, shake to mix, and then spray on the ant trail and on any suspected ant entry points into the RV. 

Soothe Poison Ivy

Poison ivy is something I don’t wish on anyone. My family has been fortunate enough to avoid it somehow, but our friend’s kids dealt with it recently and it was not fun. 

If you do end up walking through poison ivy during your RV adventures, Dawn can help. Start by washing immediately with Dawn and cool water. The oil-fighting power of Dawn will help get rid of the poison ivy oils. Follow up with another wash with Dawn and warm water to help soothe the rash. 

Scrub Up Oil Spills

Most campgrounds have strict rules about vehicle maintenance, meaning changing your engine oil in a campground is typically against the rules. That said, if you do happen to come across a park that allows oil changes, you’re probably going to want to take advantage of that. 

Obviously, the best thing to do in this case is avoid spilling oil at all. That said, if you do spill a bit of oil on your RV pad, you can get rid of it and leave it clean for the next guest. 

First, spread cat litter over the oil spill to soak up as much as possible. Pick up the oil-soaked litter with a paper towel then squirt a good amount of Dawn over the area. Use a damp scrub brush to scrub the stain until it is removed and then rinse the area with water. 

Seek Out Leaks

If you suspect a water leak or a propane leak on your rig, you’re going to want to find that as soon as possible. Water damage is no fun to deal with (trust me on this one) and propane leaks could be even worse.

Use Dawn to help you find leaks by spraying soapy water over the hose wherever you think it’s leaking. If bubbles appear, that is the culprit!

Remove Stickers

Lots of people like to put stickers on their RVs. This is fun, but when the stickers start to fade, they can look pretty ugly. The best way to remove them? Dawn, of course!

Rub some Dawn soap onto the stickers you wish to remove. Let the soap sit for several minutes then use a putty knife to carefully scrape the stickers away. Any remaining sticky residue can be removed using Goo Gone. Be sure to rinse the area after cleaning!

HOW TO FIX RV SLIDE-OUT SEALS & PREVENT LEAKS

Your RV’s slide-out is an awesome way to have more space in your RV. But if your RV slide-out seals become damaged or worn out, it can also lead to serious water intrusion and damage to your RV. But how do you fix an RV slide-out seal?

Thankfully, in most cases, it’s a relatively simple fix. Let’s take a look at how to fix your RV slide-out seals and how to maintain them to prevent future leaks.

HOW TO FIX YOUR RV SLIDE-OUT SEALS

1. Bulb seals which resemble a bike tire that’s partially inflated. These seals compress against your RV slide-out when it’s closed to prevent water intrusion.
2. Wiper seals, which look like a car windshield wiper. These flex in and out when the slide moves to prevent water intrusion.

Your RV slide-out seals can be attached in a variety of ways, each requiring a different method:

1. Glue-On: This type of seal requires a rubber-safe adhesive for its attachment.
2. Peel and Stick: This variety comes with an adhesive already applied to the seal.
3. Push-On Seals: These are designed to fit snugly over a raised edge or into a track and do not require adhesives.

Before you can fix your RV slide seals, you’ll need to determine their type, size, and how they’re attached. Your RV’s manual may contain this information, but you can also just open up the slide out and take a look at the seal. In addition to measurements like the height and width of the seal, you’ll need to check how long of a seal you’ll need. 

Once you’ve determined what seal you need, you can get a replacement from Amazon or from manufacturers like Steele Rubber. Some manufacturers will gladly send you free samples to try if you aren’t sure. 

FIXING YOUR RV SLIDE-OUT SEALS: HOW-TO GUIDE

Once you have all this information and have obtained the replacement seal or seals, you’ll also need the following:

• An adhesive remover, such as Goof Off
• Rags
• A plastic scraper
• New adhesive (if your RV slide-out seals require it)

Once you have everything assembled, do the following to fix your RV slide seal:

1. Remove the seal. Depending on your seal, it may be attached with adhesive, screws, or may simply have a push-on seal. 
2. Clean the area. Remove any grit and grime in and around the seal. Scrape away any adhesive using your plastic scraper. Don’t worry about getting all the adhesive off. Just scrape off what you can. 
3. Install the new seal. You’ll want to install the seal the same way it came off. If it was glued on, use an adhesive. If it’s push-on, push it back onto the edge or into the track, etc. 
4. Trim the seal. If there’s excess seal, trim it to match the original seal’s endpoint. 

It’s that easy! With a new seal, you’ll be safe from water intrusion and costly damage to your RV. 

HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR RV SLIDE-OUT SEALS AND PREVENT LEAKS

Proper maintenance of your RV slide-out seals is key for preventing leaks. Let’s take a look at each of the different ways to maintain your seals.

CLEANING OUT DIRT AND GRIME

One of the simplest but most essential pieces of maintenance for your RV seals is keeping them clean. When your slide-out is open, it can collect things like leaves and dirt, which can damage your seals in a variety of ways. Before closing your slide, be sure to wipe out any debris or grime that has gotten inside. 

It’s also recommended to clean your RV seals periodically, such as any time you wash your rig. This is easily done using just a rag, water, and dish soap. Simply run the rag around every side of the slide out, from inside and outside the rig.

APPLYING TALCUM POWDER

Another way to maintain your RV slide-out seals is to apply talcum powder to them periodically. This helps keep excess moisture from damaging the seal and prevents it from sticking to the RV, both of which can damage your seals over time. 

To apply talcum powder to your RV slide-out seal:

1. Take a rag or old sock and sprinkle talcum powder on it.
2. From inside the RV with the slide retracted, reach behind the edges of the slide and run the powdered rag along the top and side seals. Leave a light coat; too much could create a mess and potentially damage the seal.
3. Extend your slide out and go to the outside of your RV.
4. Sprinkle some more powder on your rag or sock and apply it all along the seals. Don’t forget to do the top of the slide out; a ladder can help you reach it.
5. If you have a slide topper, it can be a bit more challenging to get the top. You can try taking the topper off or just get as far in as you can with the topper attached.

Be sure to use only talcum-based powders. Cornstarch-based powders won’t do the job as well and could lead to your seals becoming grimy. It’s recommended to reapply talcum anytime you clean the slide-out seals.

LUBRICATING YOUR RV SEALS

Many people also use silicone lubricants on their seals, which protects them from the elements and ensures they function properly. But, many manufacturers recommend against this, because additives in some lubricants can damage the rubber seal over time. 

If you do lubricate your RV slide-out seals, we recommend using one formulated for RVs, such as Camco Slide Out Lube. Also, pump lubricants generally work better than spray lubricants, as the propellants in sprays can damage the rubber in your seals.

In 2025, we’ll see new trends that will make RVs more energy efficient than ever before, as well as designer decor and loads of stunning new or improved amenities. In this article, I’ll give you the goods on the top RV trends we can expect to see in 2025, based on models that have already been released and what we’re hearing around the industry.

1. Designer Interior Decor

For the last 40 years or so, RV interior decor has been mostly bland shades of beige and brown that leave no doubt you’re definitely in an RV. However, it appears we have seen the end of an era, as the newest trends have RV manufacturers seeking the advice of interior designers when it comes to the interior decor RVS. Instead of bizarre layouts and frumpy color schemes, a lot of 2025 RVs will have modern floorplans and fresh color schemes.

The latest trend in RV interior decor leans towards creating un upscale condo vibe, with neutral, natural colors and residential style light fixtures. Flooring and backsplashes also reflect this fresh, modern trend, with herringbone patterns and woven strand flooring. We’ll see more pet friendly features like easy care, vinyl upholstery and D-rings to secure canine campers in the campsite.

The ever-growing trend of RVers who do some form of remote work has created a demand for RVs with dedicated areas for a desk and office supplies/equipment. However, we’re also seeing office-spaces housed in the bunk room in some RVs, so the kids can do homework on the road or their parents can get some work done in a self-contained space.

3. Dedicated Cabinets and Drawers for Trash Bins

Trash cans have to go somewhere. WIth that being said many 2025 RV kitchens will have a dedicated cabinet or drawer that houses the trash can. Some RV manufacturers have gone a step further and integrated a pull out cutting board with a drop through hole in the cabinetry above the trash can. It’s the little things that count.

4. Spacious Bathrooms

For 2025, RV manufacturers are providing more spacious bathrooms with upscale vanities and roomy showers with shower seats A lot of 2025 RV bathrooms also get oodles of storage that often includes linen closets, shelves, vanity cabinet and medicine cabinet storage.

Manufacturers are recognizing that many RVers plan to use their RV for boondocking, so more RVs than ever will come with (often expandable) basic solar power systems already in place for 2025. RV manufacturers have been putting 12-volt refrigerators in RVs for a few years now. The difference is that in 2025 it’s going to be harder to find a more traditional two-way (or three-way) fridge in an RV. But having a refrigerator that runs on RV battery power doesn’t mean you’ll need to forgo space or amenities. As a matter of fact, it’s the opposite. Boasting between 11 and 21 cubic feet of interior space, many of these 12-volt refrigerators rival the one you have in your home. Many have french doors, multi-drawer freezers and ice makers. What’s more, these 12-volt refrigerators will operate on solar power, so when you’re off grid, the fridge won’t be eating up your propane supplies.

7. Airfryer/convection microwave ovens are replacing propane ovens

Let’s be honest: How many times did you use the propane oven for anything but storage last camping season? The truth is, the most underutilized appliance in most RVs is the gas oven. An upcoming trend in 2025 is the replacement of the propane oven you normally find in RVs with an air fryer oven, or a space saving combo airfryer/convection microwave oven.

8. 12-volt Smart TVs

A definite trend in 2025 RVs will see changes to RV entertainment systems. RV entertainment is stepping into a more modern age with 12 Volt smart TVs that run on RV battery power. The cool thing about these is that they allow you to stream wherever you are. Instead of drawing power from your inverter, 12-volt RV TVs draw power directly from the battery. A big design trend in 2025 RVs is secret storage. Many 2025 fifth-wheels have a walk-in pantry concealed behind the entertainment center and other hidden storage spaces. The hidden storage trend sometimes appears on a smaller scale in smaller RVs as well, with dresser tops that have concealed hinges that let them flip up, revealing otherwise invisible storage areas for jewelry and other valuables.
